THE CHILDREN'S PROJECT

Making a difference: our charitable programs that change lives

The Children’s Project

This started life from a conversation in January 2022 with Natalie Brown from Micasamo (www.micasamo.com)  property sales on LMC. She wanted to know how to help and make an impact on children in need in the local community.
Through conversations with the local primary school headmistress TCP was created. Local children were going hungry, lacked shoes and clothes, and needed simple school materials and toiletries. Funds were raised, families fed and children fit for school. Then Ruby came on the scene followed swiftly by scores of Ukrainian children arriving in the area with nothing.
This evoked an amazing responses from many volunteers co-ordinated by Natalie Brown and Ruby Elliott and one single fundraising event brought in over €18000! Dozens of families and children received help.
Since that event The Children’s Project - TCP has continued to expand and provided support for children and families in so many different ways.
Football For All

Football For All

The FFA project works alongside The Evangelical Football Club, who are based in one of the most under privileged areas of Cartagena. They give children living in poverty the chance to train and play football. In 2022 TCP provided home and away kits for 8 teams for children between the ages of 5 and 14 years. In addition, we also provided 55 pairs of football boots and shin and ankle guards, ensuring that all these children had the correct footwear and leg protection to minimise injuries.
We also provided training bibs, goal posts, nets, corner flags and cones.
The children train on designated weekday evenings and each children is encouraged to have completed school homework before training.
At the beginning of the 2023/24 season the club added over 14’s and over 16’s teams. Again, full home and away kits were provided by TCP. The Club has enjoyed some success in the leagues and cup football and one player has been signed for Cartagena FC. It is part of the TCP mission to look for and then support other sports clubs which encourage children from under privileged backgrounds to excel in what they good at.

Keeping our Schools Equal

We help underprivileged Children access education in the same way as their Spanish peers.
We do this by providing local schools with play, art, sporting and educational equipment needed to provide the best school experience for every child.
We provide school rucksacks to children in need and these are age and gender specific, and contain notebooks, relevant textbooks, toiletries, sanitary protection, toothpaste, personal hygiene items, pencil cases, lunch bags, sun cream, sun hats and mozzie spray.
We also provide Helping Hands Boxes in local schools. Theses contain everything a child would need to be in school and feel able to learn. Access to the contents is via a teacher recognising a child in need of items to aid their learning. These boxes contain food, clothing, toiletries, and school equipment and are refilled as needed.
We also offer Fresh food every Friday for families unable to feed their children at weekends and school holidays and provide Comedor for those children in need. Comedor is a school dinner and after school club. We also have a team of volunteers called the “Supporting English in Schools” team (SEIS) These volunteers go into our local primary school to support the learning of English by the children, ensuring all children can learn a second language, thus improving their career opportunities in adulthood.

Support for families fleeing war and persecution

In 2022 TCP provided clothing, food, bedding, toys, our signature school rucksacks to Ukrainian Children escaping the invasion of their country and living in hotels in the locality. Latterly in 2023/4 as these families found accommodation and work we provided furniture and household items to ensure the children had the best living conditions as possible. Many have lost their fathers, older brothers and other family members. We continue to support them as needed to ensure they have the same opportunities to thrive as other children here in Spain.

Emergency care packages

We provide one off emergency care packages to families with children in need. These care packages include, non-perishable food, cleaning and washing materials, sanitary and health essentials, nappies and wet wipes. Families are identified by schools, churches and government organisations. We aim to provide these care packages within 24 hours of the need being identified and without the family having to “jump through hoops“ to receive one.
